Goodbye Year Six!

No more blogging now, as we're coming to the end of the year and there's so much going on. Just to say goodbye and thanks for all the great memories this year. I'll leave this blog running for a while so you can take what photos you want. The videos are all still on my account on Youtube or Vimeo. In English today we studied the poem "Sea Tongue" by Kevin Crossley-Holland, preparing it for a performance recording. In the afternoon we painted some of the scenes from the poem.

Year Six get their hands dirty

With a third of the class away on Friday for the St Cecilia's taster day, the rest of us split into groups and got our hands dirty. Half were planting vegetables in our new raised bed (carrots, beans, lettuce and herbs) and the other half were painting the backdrop for the leavers' assembly. Well done for all the hard work!

Year Six went on a nature walk at King George's Park, finishing at the River Wandle. We found over 20 different species of animal and plant and enjoyed learning about the different habitats. Thanks to Valerie for leading the walk!

Macbef, innit? (The Ali G version of Macbeth)

Macbef was travellin to check main man Duncan to report is success in battle. He was wiv is wickedest main man Banquo. Suddenly three witches appeared and spoke to Macbef. “Yous will be main man one day” dey said to im. “Yous will be made Lord of Cawda. And your wickedest main man there" dey said, pointin at Banquo, "his childrun will be main mans one day". Macbef rushed westside to tell is wife. "This is wicked news" she said. "We must elp da prophecy to come true. Yous must kill main man Duncan whun he comes to our castle a bit lata on".

Macbef wasn't too sure, wot wiv Duncan bein is main man and everythin, but afta a bit more naggin by wife Macbef, he agreed to murda Duncan. In da middle of da night Macbef crept into Duncan's bedroom and knifed im. He planted da knives on da servants, who he did ave drugged, and waited till morning. Whun da body was found Macbef was made main man. Macduff and Malcolm fleed fa their lives to England. He paid a couple of gangstas to murda Banquo, so dat da witches' prophecy could not come true. Macbef throws a massiv party to celebrate. Durin da party, da ghost of banquo appears, but only Macbef can check it. Wife Macbef persuades everyone to leave sayin a usband is not well. Macbef as gone powa mad and as wife Macduff killed as well. A usband swears to kill Macbef. Macbef goes back to check da witches. Dey tell im dat he cannot be armed by any geeza born of lady and until da forest at Birnam moves up da ill. Macbef is well pleased by dis news.

He is only slightly down whun wife Macbef throws erself off da castle walls. Macduff and Malcolm wiv their armies cut branches from trees to diguise themselves and sneak up on Macbeth's castle. Da forest as moved! In a final battle, Macduff reveals dat he was born by caesarean and he chops off Macbeth's ead. And da moral is - respect your boys or you'll get your ead chopped off. Well, I fink innit da moral. Massive respect. Aye.

Every minute data is collected on our school roof about temperature, wind speed, humidity (how much water is in the air), risk of sunburn, rain rate and general forecast (based on the pressure in the atmosphere). Year Six have been helping to add topsoil to the raised beds, plant a selection of vegetation and keep things watered. Over the next term we shall start our Y6 vegetable patch and keep busy weeding and watering...watch this space!

Welcome back to Summer Term 2009 - your last term in Sheringdale! I hope you all had a great holiday and have come back refreshed and ready to work hard. Don't forget that from next week you'll be teaching the class, presenting your revision lesson (2-3 minutes) on the topic I gave you. Swimming will carry on every Monday morning until half-term, and your second PE slot will still be on Friday afternoon.

We have three weeks of revision and then SATS from the 11th - 15th May. The order of the tests is:

Monday 11th - Science A and B
Tuesday 12th - Long writing, short writing and spelling
Wednesday 13th - Reading comprehension
Thursday 14th - Mental maths, Maths A
Friday 15th - Maths B

The week after SATS is PGL school journey, so we've got that to look forward to!

Sheringdale is really sad to see Mr Glover go. He has been a great
teacher and PE coordinator, organising many things for Year 6 this
year: the cross country training / race, cricket, rugby and athletics
tournemants, running the football club and organising the dance
lessons for the Christmas show. Three cheers for Mr Glover!!

Mindmaps for revision

One of the easiest ways to revise is to produce a big colourful mindmap for each topic you're studying. Draw small pictures on the different coloured branches also helps. It's great for all the Science topics (e.g. plants, materials, forces etc.) as well as the English types of writing (e.g. persuasive, diary, newspaper etc.) Ask me if you need some A3 paper for your mindmaps!

What a busy week it's been at school! On Tuesday we celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as our favourite book characters, and on Friday we took part in Fair Trade's Go Bananas day, breaking a record by eating Fair Trade bananas, dressing up in Fair Trade colours and themes, and watching the teachers look silly on the playground in their banana race! Well done to Imi and Phakawan for all their hard work with Mrs Robinson for getting it all ready - thanks girls!
